CHI WARA
This statue is an ode to Jesse’s African roots and the tradition of honoring mythical agriculture creature, Chi Wara.
The Chi Wara masks are among the most iconic symbols of African art. They have their origins in the rich visual tradition of the Bamana people from Mali and honor the mythical agricultural creature Chi Wara half man, half antelope.
According to legend, Chi Wara brought the knowledge of agriculture to the people. However, when humanity became reckless and ungrateful, the spirit withdrew. To remember this precious gift in the long term, the Bamana created the Chi Wara mask: a ritual object that symbolizes fertility, respect for the earth and balance between man and nature.
The Chi Wara mask was traditionally worn during ceremonial dances. The dancer wore the mask on his head, often in combination with raffia costumes, as part of rituals that called for rain and fertility. These festivals celebrated not only agriculture, but also the connection with ancestors and the life energy of sexuality and creation.
